Despite the heat this weekend I charged up my camera and headed out to 3 MeanRed events. On Friday I left Webster early for the Flashing Lights rave at 88 Palace, which I’m incredibly glad I did. On Saturday I went to Tanlines and The Phenomenal Handclap Band at BKLYN Yard, and finally Dinosaur Jr and The Walkmen at Sunday’s Summerstage. Photos on Turkishomework!

Zombie Friday: Olly Moss+Legion

posted by RyanWarnberg
August 14th, 2009

Olly Moss is a sweet designer out of the UK.  I favor his more zombie-centric work, but he’s got some great stuff all around.  Check out his stuff here:  Olly Moss on Threadless

The small text reads:

A food chain is a way of depicting the flow of energy from one organism to the next and to the next and so on. The specific diagram presented here shows the biomass transfer from the lowest tier of the chain (flora) to the highest (evil reanimated corpses from beyond the grave).

There was once a time when Man stood proudly at the top of the food chain. That time has passed. Now, fueled by a black and terrible desire for brains, Zombiekind has consolidated its power and cemented its supremacy.

Surely, this is a bleak time for humanity. Our days are numbered. Fortunately, they are also charted and graphically presented for ease of reference.

POSTSCRIPT because I just came across this:

LEGION.  Movies about people trapped in shitty desert restaurants/bars while fighting for their lives against badass demons/monsters/old ladies/demon monster old ladies are the GREATEST. Tremors, Demon Knight, Feast, From Dusk Till Dawn, LEGION…that’s the lineup of the DESERT SURVIVAL AGAINST MONSTERS FILM FEST I am planning that will never ever happen.

MAGGIE HORN x JAMES NASTY - WE ALL WANT mp3!

Our girl MAGGIE HORN has teamed up with JAMES NASTY to bring you guys a new hot track to get you through these last few hot days of summer!!

Download ** WE ALL WANT**

somehow…if you’ve missed learning about Maggie Horn… check her out in our Music section and download her SIREN mixtape on the Good Peoples website!!

and as for James Nasty….

James Nasty is a quintessential Baltimore club DJ and Producer. He’s not someone from somewhere else who plays Baltimore club, he’s a young Baltimore cat who has a respect, knowledge and love of the historical background of Baltimore club, and keeps it alive by applying those production standards to his own music.  Its hysterically fun and at the same time musically solid.  There should be no doubt as to why his original tracks and remixes have been in heavy rotation in clubs from New York City to Paris to Singapore.  They boom, bounce, rattle and shake the way Baltimore club is supposed to. James Nasty has shared the bill with the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Wu Tang Clan, Kid Cudi, Dj Craze, Tittsworth, Dave Nada, Nadastrom, Dj Sega, Blaqstarr, Oh Snap!,  Klever, Treasure Fingers and Baltimore club music legends such as Scottie B, Dj Technics, Jonny Blaze, and DJ Booman

Dark Disco Photos

I took so many photos at our Summerstage event this past Saturday that by the time I got to BEMF my memory card was already full. Earlier in the day I took some photos of Boys Noize for Andrew Parks of Self-Titled Magazine around Central Park and then sat in on the hour-long interview backstage before he went on. As always, his set was incredible, as were Drop The Lime and Canyon’s. Photos below and more on Turkishomework.

Boys Noize
German born electro-tech artist Boys Noize, has been setting the pace for the international dance music scene since he was sixteen. His high-energy sets light dancefloors on fire and rock festival crowds around the globe. Boys Noize remixes – ranging from Tiga, Para One, and Feist, to Depeche Mode, Kaiser Chiefs, and Bloc Party – have been played by DJs such as Erol Alkan, SebastiAn, 2 Many DJ’s, and Justice. Back in 2008, his first single was used as a sample for Estelle’s single American Boy featuring Kanye West. Now on the eve of his newest album (due out Fall 2009), he headlines Summerstage for a day of sweaty dancing in the park.

Drop the Lime
More striking than Drop the Lime’s slicked-back hair and gold tooth are his DJ sets, which are full of slapping beats and wobbly bass lines. Mastermind behind the NYC music label / party crew Trouble & Bass, DTL has made a name for himself in nightlife culture from Miami to Milan. His sets in the UK brought him such wild praise that London’s superclub Fabric gave him a residency last year. In the past, he has performed alongside the likes of A-trak, Moby, DJ AM, and Buraka Som Sistema, and has remixed such artists as Little Boots, Blaqstarr, Rex the Dog and Armand Van Helden.

Canyons
Aussie space cowboys, Canyons, signed to Modular Records this Spring. True to their name, this DJ / Producer duo roll out expansive tracks that dip and peak, snaking from psych to acid to swampy house.

DJ Odi
DJ Odi: Urban Jungles Hip Hop Helmsman DJ Odi  is in great part responsible for the entire style of jungle music in NYC. Jungle or drum & bass is one of the evolutions of the 90s electronica wave, characterized by an emphasis on fast-paced breakbeat and prominent bassline.  His break came when running promotions for the famous NASA rave parties at club Shelter grew into a steady DJing slot. Fans would argue that it was not only the position but the skills that propelled Odi and his DJ crew, Digital Konfusion, into the underground limelight. Their way of mixing jungle beats with Hip Hop has grown into its own genre. “Jump up” has been the defining style of NYC and the east coast in general since 97, when the crew formed their own eponymous record label and began spinning at NYC’s most dedicated weekly jungle show: Konkrete Jungle. Odi rapidly became a fixture, while continuing to travel the country, one of the first few to enjoy such popularity. Eventually Odi caught the ears of Malik Shabazz, the international spokesman for the respected Hip Hop society Zulu Nation. Shortly, he initiated Odi in 03, making the Harlem native the first junglist to enter the organization.  Odi and his record label remained prolific in the recent year, DJing constantly while putting out a mix CD and producing for multiple other artists.  He now is diving into dubstep and collaborates with clothing line, Methods NYC, who is putting out a line of urban fashion inspired by the Jungle  and dub step subculture.
