Sorry for the late post.  I forgot to post on Friday because I was planning out my schedule for the New York Asian Film Festival.  For anyone in town right now, there are tons of great asian splatter/gore/freakout/horror/kung fu/action/porn/awesome movies to be had in NYC at this very second.  These are the type of movies that will play here once, and then 2 years from now they will win some award and you will wish you’d checked em out when you had the chance.  Like Vampire Girl Vs. Frankenstein Girl, showing tonight (NSFW…or anywhere else).

Subway Cinema NYAFF Schedule

Friday night I was able to check out Yoroi Samurai Zombie, from Tak Sakaguchi:  stuntman and director of the classic flick Versus. It was decent, notable mainly for the ridiculously awesome looking zombies and geysers of blood, but not for the plot/story…which was ludicrous.  I wouldn’t recommend it as a good place to start at the festival…but then again there are no good places to start so just dive in.

THOUGHTS FROM MEANRED HQ RE: TELEPHONED

Up until now, we had to be schizophrenic music fans. At our desk, we listen to blog music — remixes and edits, indie and on-the-come-up. Our playlists are as pompous as Godard dorm posters.

But in the car, all we ever play is Hot 97. Drake “Best I Ever Had” just played 5 times in an hour? Fuck Yes! The Dream “Sweat It Out”? Play that shit agaaaain.

So answer this… why do we have to lead a double life? Why doesn’t anyone get that Autotune looks good in skinny jeans? That T-Pain and WMC would go so well together? That Top 40 hits and indie dance floor jams should embrace each other like they secretly want to.

So thank you Maggie and Sammy, for this holy matrimony. We had a dream that one day, commercial hip hop and electro party stars would sit down and break bread… and you made it happen.

The trailer for Zombieland just came out.  Looks friggin hilarious.  I think Woody Harrelson peaked with Kingpin, but this looks promising.

This is a great freestyle, but its all about the details.  The Henny seems normal, but the 18′er of Bud Light, the Tuxedo (!?), and the fact that Quik can somehow make his beatbox sound like an analog drum machine plugged into a broken stereo are all the little pieces necessary to make this amazing.

I haven’t seen this one, but its on my radar for two reasons.

1)  It was made for 70 bucks.  Most of which was spent on coffee and doughnuts for the extras and actors, who worked for free.  I  can’t stretch 70 bucks past a karaoke bar and a trip to the pawn shop, and these dudes managed to make an entire zombie movie?  Come on, you know that’s brilliant.

2)  It actually provides something new to the genre:  The zombie perspective.  Apart from this strange story and a few spare moments in Return of the Living Dead (coming soon), I’ve never seen anyone tackle the zombie experience from behind the zombie’s own bloodshot eyes.

FACT Magazine has quickly become one of our favorite pit stops for new mixes. Their exclusive mix series, now 55 deep, has quickly rounded up some of the best names in electronic music. The latest in the series; 18-year-old Detroit DJ / Producer prodigy, Kyle Hall.

This kid is a MONSTER! He’s got the soul of arguably the greatest city in American music history, Detroit and the zip code for verification. Young Kyle came to our attention recently and his Youtube clips got us even more curious, sparking an official investigation.

With a thoughtful combination of that Dilla swing and the four on the floor Detroit bump made so famous by greats like Carl Craig, Kevin Saunderson and one of Kyle’s own mentors Omar-S, this kid is bringing everything out of our own personal iTunes like he hacked our server.

A few short days after we found the youngster, we discovered that Justin Carter, Eamon Harkin and Doug Singer of Sunday Best NYC had already caught on to the trail, and booked him for his big NYC debut.

Check out his mix for Fact Magazine and definitely, definitely, do not miss Sunday Best (really any weekend for that matter) on July 12th at The BKLYN Yard, where Kyle Hall will hit the DJ booth for the first time in NYC, with his parental chaperone in tow.

Just found out about this new web series, called Circledrawers.  It’s bizarre, but I just finished episode one, and I am officially captivated.  The story follows a cabal of lesser angels in God’s flawed system, the Circledrawers, ex-lowlifes who do the dirty, earthly work that no other divine being wants to do.  As far as I can tell the series centers on a quest to reclaim a Circledrawer who has been mistakenly living as a regular human for his whole life.  Think a divine Saving Private Ryan meets Brazil…or something.  Regardless, its beautiful looking and really well put together.  Check out the first episode here, and watch the rest at the Circledrawers website.

Also, I saw Drag Me To Hell this weekend and its brilliant.  The most fun I’ve had at a horror movie since Evil Dead 2. Also saw Pig Hunt at the Brooklyn International Film Festival, also highly recommended.
